The bridge of Noirmoutier Island

It connects the villages of Barbâtre in the south of the island to La Barre-de-Monts, on the north-Vendée coast, and allows to cross the Strait of Fromentine. Built by the company Dumez, the first stone was laid on 12 May 1969 in Fromentine and it was opened to traffic on 7 July 1971. It offers an alternative to the passage of the Gois (submerged road at high tide, practicable at low tide) .

The passage of the Gois

The passage of the Gois is a submersible road located in the bay of Bourgneuf in Vendée. It connects the island of Noirmoutier (Barbâtre) to the mainland (Beauvoir-sur-Mer). The road is practicable at low tide and is flooded at high tide. Length: 4.5 km. Height of water above the road: from 1.30 meters to 4 meters according to the tidal coefficient.

Still water on the passage

Still water on the passage

It's too early or too late, who knows? By good weather and strong coefficient you can cross from 1:30 before to 1:30 after the hour of low sea. In any case it is advisable to consult the signals on either side of the passage before any crossing ... Weather conditions can change these times given as an indication ...

Too late ...

Too late ...

A too late departure is imprudent, the sea covers the road, with risks getting stuck there and stays there. The car breaks down, the engine stalls. If this happens you must get out of the car cautiously and join one of the 9 equipments some of which are equipped with platforms to await the rescue in dry condition.

The nautical activity is still important and makes working a whole corporation, that of the carpenters of marine, sailmakers, engine manufacturers and shipchandlers, etc. In the old port of Noirmoutier there are many boats built traditionally by the neighboring shipyards.

At low tide the boats stand on two banks of mud. The activity resumes from the arrival of the water at rising tide. Here you can see the castle from the south shore of the harbor, where the shipyards and the carpenters are installed.
